Malie Donn is lining up his first full studio statement. The Portmore star's 20-track debut album "The Golden Child" lands September 4 via VP Records, built from two years of recordings and sequenced until the run felt right.
From a living-room "V6" to a VP debut
Donn, born Kymalie Hylton, was sitting alone in his living room when he recorded "V6," the song that later tore through TikTok and introduced a wider audience to one of dancehall's sharpest new voices. He had written the hook in his notes app on a drive from Portmore to Ocho Rios, dropped it casually, and did not overthink it. Fans eventually pushed him to put it out.
That low-key confidence runs through his catalog. Before music took over, he was a collegiate track and field athlete. After walking away from that path, he stacked early local heat with "Hennergy" and "Crook" in 2022, then broke wider when "V6" arrived in February 2023. Luminate numbers put him over 36.7 million official on-demand U.S. streams in 2026 alone.

Portmore DNA and a deliberate album build
Waterford, Portmore produced a deep dancehall roll call: Vybz Kartel, Masicka, Popcaan, Blak Ryno. Donn grew up with Kartel's music in the house and still credits that era for shaping how he hears and builds songs. "The Golden Child" was never rushed. Tracks moved in and out until the sequence held.
Features include Byron Messia, producer DJ Frass, and Squash on the title track, the first cut Donn knew had to make the album. He says the title carries sentimental weight for the struggles on the journey. Collaborators and craft both matter here: Frass helped produce Morgan Heritage's Grammy-winning "Strictly Roots," and Messia has already touched Billboard Hot 100 territory.
Highway music, videos, and awards momentum
Donn only records over riddims that move him immediately. If the beat and his energy do not lock, he walks. He calls the sound "highway music," getting bolder, holding nothing back lyrically, and trusting that openness over anything too polished. Six music videos are already shot across Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, and Jamaica so each mood gets its own visual lane.
His 2024 EP "The Grand Rising" taught him not to underestimate sleepers. "Don Julio" looked like the hit; "7:00PM" became the smash. In 2025 he won best new dancehall artist at the Caribbean Music Awards and only found out after the fact. This year he is nominated for Dancehall Impact, a category jump that matches how fast the profile has risen.
What September 4 is set up to prove
The album was originally aimed at July, then pushed to September for more promotion room while a heavy show schedule kept eating calendar space. That delay looks less like hesitation and more like staging. With VP behind the project, a deep guest list, and video inventory already banked, "The Golden Child" is positioned as the full introduction after years of singles and an EP that already proved surprises can run the table.
